US: Multiple tornadoes cause mass casualties

A powerful storm in the United States has wreaked havoc and left thousands without power, particularly in Kentucky, where up to 100 people are believed to have been killed by multiple tornadoes overnight on Friday.

The tornado has been described to be the “most severe tornado event in Kentucky’s history”. The destruction is said to be even worse than initially feared. The tornadoes had cut a swathe of devastation across 200 miles (320 kilometres).

The governor, who declared a state of emergency in Kentucky on Saturday, wrote to US President Joe Biden requesting emergency federal aid for the state. Biden granted the help, approving an emergency declaration for Kentucky and ordering federal assistance to help with local response efforts.

Other states were also affected by the devastating storm system on Friday night, tornadoes reported in six states.

Two deaths were reported in Arkansas, while in Illinois, the roof of an Amazon warehouse partially collapsed, authorities confirming six people died in Amazon warehouse collapse.
