From Campus to Career: A Sit-Down with University of Technology Bahrain’s Alumna, Reem Al Abbasi

Academic and social experiences at university set the tone for future successes in life and career. In our conversation with Reem Al Abbasi, a UI/UX designer at Playbook and an alumna from the University of Technology Bahrain, we learned about her time at the university and got some insider tips that could help students pave their way to success.

What was your major, and how did your life at UTB help in preparing you for your current role or industry?

I graduated from UTB with a Bachelor of Science in Business Informatics. I am now working towards becoming a well-known product designer and entrepreneur. UTB provided a comprehensive education by integrating business and technology to help me discover my passion. It taught me the importance of constantly improving and pushing myself by offering me internships and educational experiences for preparation. Despite the challenges I faced, this experience was empowering, boosted my confidence, and showed me that I can achieve more than I thought possible.

What, in your opinion, were some of the most valuable resources or services provided by the university?

During my time at university, the professors I encountered were not only incredibly supportive and helpful but also highly motivating. Their teaching methods and revision strategies played a crucial role in improving my understanding and performance. I also utilised the library and IT resources available, as they helped with my studies and projects.

What extracurricular activities or organisations were you involved in, and how did they contribute to your personal and professional development?

One of the most life-changing moments for me was when my graduation project, Out2Spot, was nominated for the Khalid bin Hamad Award for Graduation Projects at the University of Bahrain. Out of 75 submissions, our project was among the top 24 selected, ultimately securing a position among the top 12 in the information technology category. This recognition of our hard work was immensely gratifying. Representing both myself and UTB at this prestigious event was an honour, especially when receiving compliments on our work from HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. This recognition reinforced my commitment to academic excellence and perseverance while also fuelling my passion for technology, innovation, and problem-solving.

In your opinion, what sets UTB apart from other universities?

I praise UTB’s dedication to prioritising students’ voices and fostering a supportive environment that feels like a second home. Additionally, it stands out for its commitment to enhancing students’ career prospects through resources such as CV improvement offered through the library. With the ongoing improvements and upgrades to equipment and facilities, UTB’s dedication to providing students with the necessary tools and support to excel academically and professionally is continuously growing.

What advice would you give to students currently studying at the university to make the most of their university experience?

Make the most of your university experience by seeking out the right support and guidance while remaining committed to lifelong learning. Connect with mentors and peers, and always appreciate their help. Be open to stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things, even if they seem daunting at first. Lastly, believe in yourself. Seize every opportunity as a stepping stone for your growth, and never underestimate your abilities. The university is your gateway to self-discovery and triumph, so make the most out of your university life and make every moment count!
