Academic and social experiences at university set the tone for future successes in life and career. In our conversation with Mohamed Hasan Thabet, a Police Officer at the Ministry of Interior, a part-time Lecturer at UOB and an alumnus from the University of Technology Bahrain, we learned about his time at the university and got some insider tips that could help students pave their way to success.
What was your major, and how did life at UTB help in preparing you for your current role or industry?
During my time at UTB from 2013 to 2020, I majored in Business Informatics, combining business management with information technology, which prepared me for today’s fast-paced business environment. The curriculum’s mix of theory and practical application helped me understand business processes and data analysis deeply, resulting in my achieving a 3.98 GPA in my Master’s programme. My time at UTB was further enriched by engaging in extracurriculars, collaborative projects, and internships, honing my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. These academic and extracurricular experiences have been instrumental in my current role, where I apply my knowledge to drive innovation, solve complex problems, and make strategic decisions, underscoring the invaluable foundation UTB has provided me for success in the industry.
What, in your opinion, were some of the most valuable resources or services provided by the university?
Under the leadership of University President Dr. Hasan Almulla and his management team, the university experienced a notable enhancement in the quality of education and services, thereby fostering an environment conducive to both academic and personal development. Professors acted as essential mentors, preparing students for their future careers with substantial support. The university’s state-of-the-art technology and facilities provided practical, hands-on experience in various fields, enhancing students’ learning. Furthermore, the university’s career services played a crucial role in providing job search assistance, resume advice, interview preparation, and valuable networking opportunities. The library’s extensive resources and the university’s support for research projects greatly facilitated students’ academic work and collaborative research efforts.
What extracurricular activities or organisations were you involved in, and how did they contribute to your personal and professional development?
During my university years, I actively engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities that played a pivotal role in my personal and professional growth. As a committed member of the university football team, I developed key skills in teamwork, leadership, and time management by participating in both intramural and varsity matches. Beyond athletics, I contributed significantly to my community through volunteer work, providing academic support to fellow students and leading seminars to enrich the learning experience for both students and faculty members. Additionally, my involvement in research projects alongside professors and peers not only enhanced my academic understanding but also sharpened my critical thinking abilities, equipping me for future academic and professional challenges.

What advice would you give to students currently studying at the university to make the most of their university experience?
To navigate the path to success, embrace perseverance by viewing challenges as growth opportunities and recognising that setbacks are essential learning moments, paving the way for eventual triumph. Academic excellence is crucial; dedicate yourself to your studies to build a robust foundation for your future career, especially as industries evolve. Furthermore, cultivate resilience against negativity by shielding yourself from harmful influences and excessive worry about the future. Stay goal-oriented, optimistic, and surround yourself with positivity to foster inspiration and progress.
