Dubai’s RTA Announces Development of Bus Stations, Depots Under New 3-Year Plan
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded contracts to enhance 22 bus stations and depots across the city over three years.
The improvements form part of RTA’s strategy to develop public transport infrastructure and encourage residents to use buses for daily travel.
The project involves infrastructure works, passenger facilities, waiting areas, driver offices, overnight parking, workshops and maintenance bays at 16 bus stations and six depots.
“Building public bus stations and depots forms a key part of RTA’s strategy to enhance the public transport infrastructure. It aims to encourage the community to opt for public transport in their daily movements. The project goes beyond the traditional function of stations, aiming to not just facilitate passenger mobility but to enhance the overall travel experience. This encompasses offering comprehensive services that contribute to passenger happiness, improving accessibility for people of determination, providing bicycle racks, and ensuring seamless connectivity with Dubai Metro and taxi services,” RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer said.
Nine stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai will see renovations such as system upgrades, prayer rooms and refurbished exteriors.
The depots will undergo refreshes including inspection lanes, wash areas, drainage works and new infrastructure.
Facilities for drivers will be installed at Jebel Ali and Al Quoz depots. Exteriors across all stations will get traffic signals, sidewalks, lighting and security systems. Bus parking areas will be redesigned at five stations.
RTA completed several public bus stations in 2021 including at Al Ghubaiba, Union and Dubai International Airport Terminal 3. These linked transport services and enabled safe access for residents.
The enhancements seek to provide welcoming, accessible transport and integrate various modes and developments through pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. RTA aims to promote alternative individual mobility options, the report said.
