Mild Earthquake Hits UAE, Residents Feel Tremors

A mild 1.9 magnitude earthquake struck the UAE on Friday night.

The National Centre of Meteorology said that it was “slightly felt by residents”. The quake struck Al Halah at 9.57pm UAE time, at a depth of 5km. Al Halah is an area in Fujairah near Wadi Tayyibah. Here’s a map:

The quake took place “without any effect UAE”, the NCM said.

Though the UAE detects tremors every now and then, seismology experts had said residents have no reason to worry about earthquakes in the region.

“The UAE has low to moderate seismicity; hence we are safe. We are not on the active seismic belt,” an NCM official told Khaleej Times in a previous report. “We have frequent tremors ranging from two to three in a year.”

Prior to the mild quake in Fujairah on Friday, residents felt tremors in Khor Fakkan in April. A minor 2.8-magnitude earthquake was also recorded in Masafi on the border of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah in January.
