Dubai Police Report 8 Pedestrian Deaths Last Year; Safety Campaign Launched After 43,187 Jaywalking Incidents
Eight people died in Dubai last year after being run over on roads in the emirate, according to police data.
Dubai Police shared a video on social media showing cases of jaywalking in the city and published updates on the number of accidents and violations last year.
Police said there were a total of 43,187 incidents where people were caught crossing roads at undesignated points in 2023.

On 320 occasions there were accidents on roads in Dubai due to crossing at undesignated points, down from 364 the year before.
The road accidents resulted in eight deaths, down from 20 in 2022.

Police gave a detailed breakdown of the number of jaywalkers caught by month:

- October: 4,239
- November: 4,045
- December: 2,979

General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police, said that during 2023 there had been eight deaths.
Furthermore, 339 people were injured, with 33 serious injuries, 155 moderate injuries, and 151 minor injuries.
Al Mazrouei stressed the Police’s keenness to ensure that the emirate’s roads are the safest and most secure and to preserve lives and property, pointing out that some pedestrians commit wrong practices.
He identified unsafe actions such as people sleeping underneath parked trucks and climbing barriers to cross busy roads.
He added that Dubai Police will continue to run safety awareness campaigns in an effort to reduce the number of accidents on roads in the city.
Laws in the Emirate prohibit the crossing of roads in undesignated areas, with fines of AED400 ($109) for violators identified and caught.
