UAE Joins BRICS Economic Group

The UAE has officially become a member of the BRICS group, following a successful application approved by the founding nations during the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24.

“The UAE is committed to multilateral action, and constructive dialogue which is fostered through active platforms that represent developing and emerging economies at an international level”.

The nation has been a long-term partner of the group, previously participating in the ‘Friends of BRICS’ forum in Cape Town and joining the BRICS New Development Bank in 2021.

UAE’s commitment to BRICS

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude to the BRICS founding members, highlighting the UAE’s focus on “long-term economic prosperity and maintaining balanced strategic and economic relations.”

Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, also noted the UAE’s commitment to “international and multilateral cooperation to achieve sustainable development for all countries around the world.”

Ahmed Al Sayegh, Minister of State, emphasised on the UAE’s position as a global hub for trade and economic development, highlighting its “open approach to reinforcing collaboration with international economic institutions.”

Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, further underscored the UAE’s dedication to promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity through multilateral partnerships.

“We are pleased to join the BRICS group, which the UAE recognises as a mechanism to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity,” she said.

The UAE’s inclusion in the group, set to begin in January 2024, reflects its growing role in the international arena and its commitment to fostering cooperation for the betterment of nations worldwide.

With its strategic approach and dedication to multilateralism, the UAE aims to play a significant role in advancing global security and development.
