Beyond the Degree: An Interview with University of Technology Bahrain’s Alumnus, Murtadha Abdulnabi Ahmed

Academic and social experiences at university set the tone for future successes in life and career. In our conversation with Murtadha Abdulnabi Ahmed, a rolling engineer at SULB and an alumnus from the University of Technology Bahrain, we learned about his time at the university and got some insider tips that could help students pave their way to success.

What was your major, and how did life at UTB help prepare you for your current role or industry?

I took up Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering. Life at UTB provided me with the technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, interdisciplinary perspective, practical skills, and teamwork capabilities necessary for success in my current role.

What, in your opinion, were some of the most valuable resources or services provided by the university?

UTB’s offerings were highly esteemed, including its knowledgeable faculty, state-of-the-art laboratories, comprehensive libraries, and accessible online databases. The institution also excelled in providing career-oriented services, along with enriching internship and cooperative education opportunities. Students benefited from dedicated academic advice and counselling, a vibrant array of student organisations and clubs, academic support services, and well-maintained campus facilities and amenities.

What extracurricular activities or organisations were you involved in, and how did they contribute to your personal and professional development?

During my last academic year at UTB, serving on the Student Council profoundly influenced my growth, both personally and professionally. Being a part of the council enhanced various skills and qualities within me and was instrumental in sharpening my leadership abilities and improving my communication and interpersonal skills. My role allowed me to gain valuable experience in organising events and managing projects. It also provided me with the opportunity to advocate for and represent my peers, which in turn expanded my network and helped me build lasting relationships. Additionally, it offered me a deeper insight into the workings of university governance. Overall, my involvement in the Student Council significantly boosted my confidence and contributed to my personal development.

In your opinion, what sets UTB apart from other universities?

In my opinion, what sets UTB apart from the others is their academic reputation, faculty expertise, research opportunities, campus facilities, student support services, and the overall learning environment.

What advice would you give to students currently studying at the university to make the most of their university experience?

Students can truly enhance their time in university by setting clear goals, actively engaging in their courses, pursuing mentorship, getting involved in extracurricular pursuits, forming networks and connections, leveraging the resources the university offers, securing internships or practical work experience, appreciating the richness of diversity and cultural interactions, maintaining a harmony between academic efforts and personal well-being, and focusing on their own development. By following these guidelines, students can create a fulfilling and enriching university experience that prepares them for future success.
